Review of Indiemusic.com

For this weeks blog post I chose to review the website Indiemusic.com.  This site at first glance is very simple with no advertising or pictures.  The first page gives us a choice of independent bands/artists, e-zines | labels | sites and mission statement | info.  Clicking the first choice we are provided with links to independent artists.  The artists can be found by going through each page to find the artist/band you want or search by category.  Each category of music can be found on the second page of the website.  I think this is a very easy way to find the right musician you want for either personal enjoyment or for a business venture.  When clicking the second link, e-zines | labels | sites you are taken to a links page of labels, tour info for bands and much more in the way of indie music.  The problem with this page is that many of the links are either bad or spam.  This shows that the webmasters do not check all the links added, which can be discouraging.  That being said there’s still useful information on this page.  The third and final click on the main page is the mission statement.  The mission statement is very brief and to the point, which I like.

Probably the worst part of this site is its lack of creativity.  This site helps to promote independent artists and could probably use a bit more flash or pictures at least on the site.  I feel that a bit more creativity could get the site more hits as well as more recognition.  In their defense Indiemusic.com is free and probably keeps it costs low by keeping the site simple.  The mission statement page reaffirms the idea of simplicity and free going hand-in-hand.

Overall Indiemusic.com is a very good site.  They keep their costs low by keeping the site simple, which makes perfect sense.  Yet they still manage to give their audience a wealth of information through easily accessible links.  I enjoy keeping up with the indie music scene because these are the artists I will eventually work with.  The website that I plan to design in the near future will mirror some of the design of Indiemusic.com.  At the same time I plan to learn from the weaknesses of this site to make my site stronger and more artistic.
